How to Install Recycled Garden Edging

Recycled garden edging is an easy, low cost and perfect for DIY garden edging and borders. It's simple and straight forward to install and gives you plenty of flexibility to design your garden exactly the way you want it.

Made from durable recycled material, it’s long-lasting, easy to work with, and perfect for creating clean, modern garden borders.

Step 1: Measure Your Space

First, Start by measuring how much garden edging you’ll need. If you garden has straight edges, simply measure the length you need to cover.

If you have curves, insert some pegs or sticks into the ground along your edging, grab a string line or twine and run it along the curves. Cut and measure the string for the exact amount of edging you will need.

Its always good to add 5-10% for any contingencies.

Step 2: Roll It Out and Cut to Size

Once you’ve measured, roll out the edging along your garden line and cut it to length. The material is flexible, so it’s easy to handle and shape.

You can cut the recycled edging with a hand saw or score the edging with a utility knife and bend the edging along the score line.

Step 3: Create Your Angles

Need a 90° corner? Simply measure where you want the bend, fold the edging at that point, and step on it to create a neat, square angle.

Step 4: Dig a Shallow Trench

Next, dig the trench along your garden border or pathway. Using a shovel, make it deep enough for the edging to go about halfway down. Keep the trench just wide enough to accommodate the edging and a bit of backfill.

For straight trenches, run a string line between two pigs,  ensure that it's straight and level. If your trench is curved, place pegs along the border following your curves and run the string to match the curve.

Use a tape measure to make sure the height is consistent all the way along the trench.

Step 5: Install Garden Edging Pegs

Use a hammer or rubber mallet and hammer in the plastic garden edging pegs approx. 1 metre apart to secure the edging along your garden border.

Step 6: Back Fill

Backfill with soil, and compact it in place. Once installed, add your chosen ground cover or mulch to finish the look.

For straighter and more even edging, roll out the edging and leave it in the sun for 24 hours to help it flatten.

And that’s it — a simple, long-lasting garden edging that keeps your garden looking great all year round.
