How do I use lead test swabs on painted surfaces?

First scratch the painted surface to expose all paint layers. Then snap the tip of the swab to activate it, and shake until the liquid moves to the tip. Rub the swab on the scratched area. If the tip turns red or pink, lead is present. If there's no color change, lead was not detected.

What do the results mean if the swab changes color?

A red or pink tip indicates the presence of lead. If there is no color change and the tip stays yellow or clear, lead was not detected. Always follow safety precautions if lead is found.

What surfaces can I test with these lead swabs?

You can test for lead on painted wood, metal, plastic, pipes, and other solid surfaces. These swabs are ideal for checking window frames, skirting boards, trims, furniture, and other painted areas

Are lead test swabs accurate?

These swabs provide fast and reliable screening results for the presence of lead. While they are accurate for general use, they are not a certified laboratory test. For confirmation, you can send a sample to a lab if needed.

Can I use these swabs during home renovations in New Zealand?

Yes, these test swabs are suitable for DIY and professional use in New Zealand. They’re ideal for checking older homes for lead-based paint before sanding, scraping, or painting. Always follow safety guidelines and wear protective gear when lead is present.
